Moos Memorial

July 11, 2013

Thank you everyone who was able to make it to Jeff’s memorial service last night. We were blown away by all of the people and all of the stories of how you knew Jeff. It would be impossible to plan a memorial that could pay tribute to such a great man, but we think last night came pretty close to doing just that. Thank you everyone who helped make it possible and who came and shared great stories.

We want to also thank members of the media who have picked up our dads story. In particular, Tom Archdeacon of the Dayton Daily News, and C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer. To our family, this isn’t a story about a mans dying wish- our dad had his family with him all along which would have been his dying wish. To us, this is a story about an amazing family man, his faith in God, and the unbelievable baseball games he got to experience right before passing away. Seeing two no hitters and going on the field before the game were experiences that he would never have dreamed about, but God had a plan for Jeff’s final days and months. Thanks Trent and Tom for sharing our story.

Thank you everyone for the love and support over the past three days. A memorial service followed by a celebration will be held at Benham’s Grove in Centerville on Wednesday July 10th at 6 pm.

Here is the link to Jeff’s Obituary in today’s Dayton Daily News : Obituary

Jeff loved working with kids at the Dayton Gospel Mission. In lieu of flowers his wish was that donations be made to the youth program there. PO Box 1141 Dayton, OH 45401.

Again, thank you everyone for helping us through this difficult time. We miss Jeff terribly, but are so thankful for the past three weeks of priceless time we had with him and all of you.

We are terribly sad to tell you that Jeff passed away yesterday, July 4th, 2013. His condition changed rapidly beginning on the evening of July 3rd. He was at home, surrounded by his wife Colleen and their three kids, as he left this world for the next. Thank you all for the support and prayers. We will post details of arrangements once they are made.

July 4th, 2013

Jeff has had another fantastic week. Well wishes, prayers, gifts, and visitors have continued to pour in and we thank you all so much.

Last weekend Jeff and some old friends piled into a limousine and drove to Athens for the day. They visited a friend, ate some great food, and shared a million stories. That day meant a lot to Jeff – thank you Chapman, Fink, Goat, Needle, and the rest of the group.

A few days later, Jeff was treated to dinner at The Pine Club, courtesy of his aunt and uncle from Indianapolis. Thank you again Aunt Jo and Uncle Jack for that great meal! He and Colleen are still talking about it.

Throughout the past two weeks Jeff has been fit enough to play cards with some poker buddies. One friend took him to the new Cincinnati casino where he got to eat jumbo shrimp in the VIP lounge. He also played at games here in Centerville and in Bellbrook. He says he got lousy cards both nights except for two hands. Both nights he won ” best hand of the night” – once with quad 5’s and once with quad 3’s. Thank you to all of Jeff’s friends at the poker table for helping him get back into action!

On Sunday morning we got a special treat – Jeff made his famous pumpkin waffles. Our family was at the house along with Cheryl and Kate Johnston and our cousin Alex Montavon. We all got to pig out on one of our favorite meals in the world – there is nothing like a fresh pumpkin waffle with homemade syrup – especially when it’s shaped like Mickey Mouse. Look at the pictures on the blog and you’ll see one of Dad serving up some waffles years ago. This was a fantastic morning we will always cherish – thanks to the Johnstons and Alex for joining us!

Now for the story of the amazing day we had on Tuesday, July 2nd. As Colleen explained in the previous post, one of Abby’s best friends contacted a family we know here in Dayton – the Trebnicks. Their family has a close connection with Joey Votto, the superstar of the Cincinnati Reds. When they reached out to Joey to see if he could do anything for our dad, he came through in a BIG way. We were given field passes for batting practice on Tuesday as well as some fantastic seats for the game. The entire day was amazing – starting with the Cincinnati reds employees who gave us extra field passes without any hesitation – All six of the adults in our family were then able to experience batting practice. We got onto the field on Tuesday and were simply blown away. Jeff literally had to hold his chin up because it kept falling down in disbelief at what we were experiencing. Dusty Baker came over for autographs and a picture, as well as Todd Frazier. Then the moment came when Joey walked over to meet us.

Joey Votto couldn’t have been a nicer, more humble, and down to earth guy. He talked with my dad for a long time (we know Jeff can be a talker). Joey saw us trying to interrupt Dad for a picture and quietly said to him “sir would you like to get a picture for your kids?” – it was effective at getting dads attention! Joey then gave Jeff an autographed authentic bat. It is a Joey Votto bat with the official engravings on it and a nice note from Joey. After a few autographs, and what felt like an eternity of standing their drooling and not coming up with anything significant to say, Joey went back to practice. It was a fantastic experience that none of us will ever forget. A million thanks to Jess Litscher, April Trebnick, The Reds, and Joey Votto.

After batting practice we got dinner and then returned to the field for the game. After what we had just experienced, the reds could have lost an ugly game and we still would have gone home elated. But the reds didn’t lose, and it wasn’t just a normal game. Last September Jeff and Colleen went to Pittsburgh for their anniversary. They went to a reds – pirates game and witnessed Homer Bailey pitch a no-hitter for the reds. It was the first no hitter for the reds since 1988. This past Tuesday, at the game we went to, Homer Bailey pitched his second no-hitter in 10 months. It was one of the most amazing Cincinnati Reds games anyone could ever witness, and it fell on my dads special night at the park. It was a moment we will all talk about for the rest of our lives. We all couldn’t believe it and couldn’t contain our excitement. We were together as a family and it was just an amazing night. Jeff and Colleen were sitting right by the reds dugout at the end of the game and the tv camera showed them standing in their seats cheering on Homer. When the reds made the final out we kids went berserk and then quickly left our seats and ran down to meet my parents (where we went berserk again).

Thank you to everyone that has sent kind words, stories, and prayers. We have all felt Gods hand touching us and surrounding us with His blessings. If you are praying, please continue to pray for Jeff’s comfort, peace, and happiness. We can’t thank everyone enough for everything you have done. Thank You!

July 1st, 2013

Thank you to Jane and Abby in particular for getting this blog up and running – Jeff and I have been in agreement – our kids are awesome. Jeff is on big doses of steroids to reduce swelling around the tumor that have allowed him to regain his strength and alertness – have been enjoying each day to the max – wanted to pass on that one of Abby’s good friends contacted another mutual friend that knows Joey Votto  (All Star Reds player for those not in the know). She called Joey to see if there was something he could do for “Mr. Crews” (thinking a jersey or something) –when he heard Jeff’s story he said he’d call her back – and did – with his tickets for the July 2nd game – on field passes for batting practice with the players before the game and who knows what else-we are all psyched and we’re hoping Jeff can bring them some luck against the Giants.

Looking at the list of names in this blog I know you’re praying for Jeff – thank you and know that we have been grateful recipients of many blessings.

Jeff’s good friend sent this as soon as he heard Jeff was sick-it has been our hope:
“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid…for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Deuteronomy 31:6

Please continue to pray- and, speaking of Giants, we believe what David said to Goliath, “The battle is the Lord’s”

Hello all! Jeff has been doing really well! This week he even had his catheter taken out! He is continuing the steroid to decrease swelling and the only complaint he really has is that he is more tired than usual- this could be due to the non-stop fun he has been having!

Saturday night was a blast and thank you again to all of the family and friends who came over! We ate Flying Pizza and all sorts of desserts including a delicious frozen watermelon that Jay Chapa and family brought over from Friendly’s. Chapa- listening to you tell stories was fun for everyone- you are hilarious and Jeff loved seeing you! (BIG THANKS to Ryan Chapa for hooking us up with some grub last week too!!!) It was rough saying goodbye to Tim and Janet Healy but we are all very excited that they will be coming back to town for the 4th of July!

Sunday Jeff had another great day- “like Christmas” is what he has been saying about every day that we all spend with family and friends together. Two of his best friends from his childhood came over and hung at the house. Again we all got to hear some hilarious old stories- including Jeff holding a record for fastest trip from Dayton to Cincinnati. He was in his 20’s and we won’t mention the actual amount of time that his friends swore on- lets just say it is a true blessing, again, that Jeff has been able to become such an amazing man. While some are hilarious and some are a bit concerning, these stories that keep pouring in about Jeff (before he was saved and married Colleen) have acted as an amazing reminder to all of us that no matter how you are leading your life it can always be turned around and made into something beautiful. It has majorly touched us kids to hear that our dad was so wild in his younger days and became the most honest, humble and loving man that we all know. Love you tons Dad!!!!!

On Monday London, Lylah and Brody(his grandchildren) all spent time at the house with papa. Mandy Rector-Hayward came in from Tennessee to visit all of us and help out too. Jeff loved seeing her and so did our family! While Lylah napped Brody and London headed to Aunt Chrissy’s pool and had a blast! Thank you again Chrissy for your help!! During that time Janey’s friend from high school came over and did relaxation massages for Colleen and Jeff. Oriana- we loved being able to see you and thank you for putting your skills to good use! That evening was wonderful- weather was beautiful and we all sat as a family on the back patio and had dinner.

Tuesday Jeff headed to a casino in Cincinnati with some friends of his. The highlight of the trip for him was the all-you-can-eat buffet. This was hilarious to all of us because he has been eating like a horse. It must’ve been a sight! Though he didn’t gamble he said he had a great time! While he was out Colleen, Grandma Healy, Aunt Christy, Mandy and Janey all hung out together and blabbed then headed to the Greene for dinner. It was great to spend time together and see Mandy while she was in town.

Wednesday a doctor from Hospice came in and reviewed Jeff’s condition. It seemed apparent to her that the initial 4-6 weeks diagnosis was going to be easily passed. Because everyone is different it is very hard for any doctor to tell us all exactly what to expect. We are enjoying the good times and taking it day by day. Jeff has asked again about the process that he would go through if he were to have surgery and still stands firm with his decision. We all are supporting him and Colleen. Please continue to pray and thank you again for all of your support!

Today we have set up a meal train account for our parents. Everyone keeps asking what they can do to help and the one thing that keeps coming up is dinner. Meal train has a little calendar setup where you can arrange dinner for the evening, instructions are all on the site and you can also contact Janey at (937) 572-8851 or janecrews87@gmail.com. Below is the link…thank you all again!!!

Jeff is still doing very well. He is continuing to take steroids to keep swelling down and a medication for upset stomach. He has actually stopped taking Tylenol for headaches because he hasn’t experienced any for a few days. His personality is back, his spirits are high, and he continues to put his faith in God. It is obvious to us that all of the love and prayers being sent his way are helping! Thank you all for the continued support!

In the past week we have had so many visitors and it has been such a blessing to spend time with family and friends. Pastor Bill Browning stopped in and prayed with the whole family (thank you!) and came again a few days later to find Jeff out in the neighborhood going for a stroll with his daughter and grandson. Jeff’s Aunt and Uncle from Indiana came to visit and brought along a homemade apple pie that was devoured. Lee, one of Jeff’s good friends from the men’s group at Southbrook, came by the other morning and prayed with our family. A HUGE thank you to Grandma Healy, Aunt Chrissy, May-may, and Sis for their company and several meals they have prepared for our family. Thank you to Cheryl Johnston, Debbie and Robin Chapa, Jim Rohr, Terry and Rita Brown, Mrs. Baird (your cookies are the best) and Cristen Healy for coming to visit and spend time with all of us. Again, Jeff has loved being able to see all of you and so does our family!! Thank you!

Yesterday Jeff’s oldest daughter had to move into her new place. In the past week her friends mowed the lawn and packed the entire house for her. Friends and family came out of the woodwork to help her move into the 3rd floor apartment – the whole place was unpacked in an hour! Thanks so much to all of you for your help it is greatly appreciated!

Last night Jeff and Colleen headed to a Colonel White reunion. Jeff got to see a bunch of childhood friends and share great memories – he had a blast! Tim Healy and his family, Grandma and Grandpa Healy, and Jeff’s family from Indiana are all coming back today to visit. We will post some more photos later today. Thank you all again for everything and to anyone we missed thank you soooooo much!

Coming Home

Jeff came home on Friday, June 14th. While he is still having moments of general confusion, he is able to eat whatever he likes, walk around a bit, and talk to all of us. Considering that he could barely speak in the hospital, with stroke like symptoms on his left side, these past few days have been filled with blessings.

Fathers Day was great! His family spent the day with him eating, laughing, and even installing a rain barrel (something he wanted to water his beloved tomato plants). The highlight of the day was when his youngest granddaughter, Lylah, said “Papa” for the first time!

Monday, Jeff was even able to get out of the house and see Brody, his 4 year old grandson, at his baseball practice for the first time. This was something that Jeff looked forward to from the day Brody was born.

Tuesday was wonderful! Starting with breakfast from Bill’s Donuts and topping off the day with dinner on the back patio. Jeff couldn’t have been happier to see so many of his family members and close friends these past few days!

Our family is so thankful for all of the love and support. Please continue to pray for Jeff, his wife Colleen, and their family.
